Data Request Process FAQ

  • What information should I include in my DAR to have the highest chances of approval?
    • DARs with more comprehensive information about the project goals, collaborators and analysis plans have the highest likelihood of approval. Ensure that the email address(es) provided align with the institutional affiliation provided, and that your proposed project aligns with the dataset’s specific DUA terms.
  • Why do DARs get rejected?
    • Here are some common reasons DARs can get rejected:
      1. Applicant's country is flagged as not being approved for access by the data contributor’s organizational standards
      2. Basic researcher information doesn't align with the stated affiliation — e.g., using a personal Gmail address instead of an institutional email
      3. Project aims substantially overlap with an existing, in-progress project
      4. Project aims do not align with the dataset’s specific Data Use Agreement terms—e.g., using for commercial validation on a dataset that can only be used for non-commercial purposes
      5. Insufficient detail provided in the application
  • What is the average timeline to DAR decision?
    • Datasets with an automated approval process will typically return a decision within 2-3 hours. The timeline varies for datasets that undergo manual review and can be found on each dataset’s specific catalog listing.
  • How do I update a DAR once it’s already submitted?
    • DARs are unable to be updated once submitted. If you’d like to update your submission after a decision has been made, please submit a new DAR.
